Cambodia’s Dog Meat Trade

Approximately three million dogs are eaten every year in Cambodia. They are rounded up from the streets and transported to slaughterhouses across the country, where they are killed in inhumane ways. Studies show that approximately 50% have rabies, posing a major public health threat. The story is featured in numerous British and Cambodian news outlets, leading to global outrage and changes in the law.

Dog Drowning Dungeons

Millions of dogs in Cambodia are being killed to fulfill the growing demand for their meat. Four Corners discovered cages stuffed with dogs, many infected with rabies, lining the floor of a dark, cobweb-filled shed near Phnom Penh.

At the other end of the room lay two ‘drowning pits’. A young macaque sat chained above the water, watching as the dogs were hauled up and dunked into the fetid water.

Dog Meat Restaurants

Such dog-drowning dungeons provide meat for the ever-increasing dog meat industry. There are more than a dozen dog meat restaurants within a three-mile radius of Angkor Wat, one of the most famous tourist attractions in Asia.
